I have a friend who wants to install a tuner into his 7.3. Which ones are you guys
using. Im using custom sct tunes on my 6.0, but had to do many mods before the tuner. What mods are needed on the 7.3 to use a tuner? Thanks in advance, curt
An intake and exhaust depending how crazy you wanna go with your tuning but youll find that a DP Tuner or Tony Wildman will over ride this thread soon, good luck
The majority of us are running DP-tuners. Some run TW tunes and what what i hear they are preety much the same in quality/performace/ect... I have a DP and love it. I assume he has an auto tranny in his truck so pretty much he would want to atleast do a JW valve body before a tuner. Besides that when he calls and talks to jody he will get excactly what he needs for his trucks set up.
My advice is fix everything that is broken FIRST. Leaky up-pipes, crappy stock CAC boots (get boots, plenum inserts and t-bar clamps from Riffraff) and any oil leaks you may have. If he has stock air filter, either upgrade to AIS or DIY Tymar (6637). Flush coolant and replace with ELC - consider adding a coolant filter. Service trans, t-case and diff's.
THEN buy gauges.
Then straight-pipe stock exhaust (the gains from stock straight-pipe to 4" turbo back are not significant - except 4" is LOUDER). If you are not towing (and your tunes don't suck ), stock exhaust is FINE. Upgrade later...
My current tunes are much better than my first 'chips'. They make my engine(s) waaaaay quieter (less timing?), I struggle to get EGT's high - even towing in 100hp, have more power and higher boost while seeing better fuel economy (when I want to - LOL). If you learn about tuning these trucks, you'll find there are different ways to 'make more power' and the tuners each have their own ideas on how to do it. The fact is, you give anyone in a stock truck 'tunes' - and they'll think they are GREAT!! Consider that when someone is recommending a tuner...
