I just bought a 1997 f150 4x4 lariat edition with the 5.4 liter motor in it. And I notice that the exhaust is just a straight pipe the exits right in front of the passenger rear tire. My question is: is this bad for the truck? Would I benefit from purchasing an actual exhaust system from the cat back?
Get under and look at the whole system.
Are there two cats each side?
Is there a muffler?
You have not given very much info other than a 'notice'.
Good luck.
Sounds like someone just took off the muff and replaced it with a piece of pipe. 97 did exit in front of the tire. I don't see any advantage in replacing it except maybe for the stock sound...????. As long as the cats and all o2's are in place I don't see a performance issue either direction.
If the right amount of back pressure is not present the engines performance will suffer, less power and worse milage. Less back pressure is one thing, to a point. But removing all back pressure in a stock motor will definitely ruin overall performance. Put some type of Turbo muffler back on it, and exit in front of the LR wheel. Mine is set up that way and I get good milage, sound, and plenty of power for an engine with 196,000 mi. on it.
Well I crawled under and gave it a closer look.. all the did was cut the muffler off and weld a piece of pipe in place of it. Looks like a homemade job and whoever did it was not a good welder. I'm a big flowmaster fan so I believe ill be looking into buying a flowmaster for it. I also like the sound of hooker mufflers.. may get one of those.
