These four digits are the Domestic Special Order number only! When something is installed on a vehicle per the original purchasers request that is not an RPO (Regular Production Order), the vehicle becomes a Domestic Special Order. No COLOR code on the Warranty Plate, painted a non standard color. Converted to 4WD, a PTO, winch or special back of cab equipment installed.
What happens when the paint formula is required, or parts are needed for the non RPO's since none are listed in the parts catalogs? Dealer contacts FoMoCo, passes along the DSO. FoMoCo looks up order number, passes back the paint formula or where parts can be found for the special equipment installed. The same DSO system is used today.
If this truck was a 1963, it would have a 6 digit DSO code. The first two digits decode to the District Sales Office the truck was ordered from.
If it was ordered from the Davenport Iowa Ford District Sales Office, the DSO code would be: 454581.

OP posted TRANS code of FA, there is no 2nd digit in the TRANS code, OP copied it down wrong. The TRANS code is F, the AXLE code is 12A
* There is no way to know how these trucks were originally configured.
There is no code within the VIN or stamped on the Warranty Plate that decodes to a: Styleside or Flareside Pickup or with a factory installed Platform or Platform & Rack.
The ONLY thing you can assume is the truck left the assembly line as a Cab & Chassis, because all "back of cab" equipment was optional.
1963 thru today:
Two digit DSO: Decodes to the district sales office the vehicle was ordered from.
SIX digit DSO: First two digits decode to the district sales office, last four is the Domestic Special Order number.

For 61 you need to use the 61 shop manual not the 62 63 supplement.
You may also notice the 61 and 62 plate says "Serial Number" where as the 63 tags and later say "Warranty Number".
No DSO until 63 as Bill stated.

Stamped correctly: The AXLE code would be 12A / The third digit refers to the front axle.
