Anyone tell me what it means when you start to engage clutch and it sounds like a bunch of marbles or ball bearings or something. Clutch engages fine. I did however have the Dealer install a new clutch 4 weeks ago.
It can be a # of things !
Was throwout bearing replaced at the same time the clutch was?
Did they put in a new pilot bearing?
Did they chk the front input shaft bearing on your trans for excessive play?
It can also be clutch chatter between the new clutch and old pressure plate !
I know I paid for the bearings (throwout & pilot) also paid for brand new flywheel. I figured $1600.00 ( Fiesta Ford, Indio CA.) should of covered everything. Could it be something wrong with the tranny. In my past experience, when the trans. made a God awfull noise it was about 3 seconds before it imploded.
I've noticed this noise has been building for about a week now.
I couldn't quite tell, did this happen after the new clutch was installed?
If so, possibly a defective throwout bearing?? They can make a horrible rattle, like marbles in a can......or......the pressure plate is in backwards, but that's usually more of a squeal.
If this is a result of the new install, take it back and let them worry about it..............................just get an F350 SD loaner!
I am assuming you have a 7.3 diesel. If this is correct you have a zf 5spd or 6spd depending on year of the truck. I am guessing a powerstroke from the price you paid on the clutch job. ZF trany are notorious for whats known as gear rollover noise. You typically hear this under deceleration in 1st or 2nd when the motor is chugging or when the truck is stopped and taken out of gear. Ususally once you load the trany the gears tighten and the noise disappears. Let me know for sure what year truck we are working on and I can be more specific about other options.
My tranny is making the same whyyyyyning noise when the engine is at idle speed and connected to any gear in the trans. Many people have told me its the throwout bearing. What sucks is that I have not priced it yet, and $1600 means it going to have ta make alot more noise before I'll be able to get it fixed.
Anybody know anything about a slight shake when the truck is stopped, clutch disengaged, and tranny in gear. Its almost like the clutch is not disengaged all the way. It stops if I take it out of gear, but it is hard to get it back in gear. It doesn't do it all the time. Any quick fixes? The clutch fluid reservoir is full.
If your trucks are pre 1997 alot of the vibrations and noises can be attributed to the dual mass flywheel in these trucks. To replace this flywheel at the dealer it is around 1000.00 just for the flywheel. Luk makes a replacement kit that includes the clutch kit and a new solid flywheel that is half as much and is twice the clutch. Let me know what year trucks you are dealing with or if you have the 5spd or 6spd truck. Once I know this I can help you narrow the coices of problems.

I can only think of 2 possibilities on the 6.8L. The first is a defective clutch. The pilot brg or rel brg could be making the noise but more than likely if the clutch is bad I would bet on the springs in the disc being loose and rattling. I think this is why the vibration you feel goes away when the clutch is disengaged. Keep in mind Ford clutches are remans. The second thought for the noise is whats known as gear rollover in the trany. When the trany is loaded, such as acceleration, the noise disappears, but when unloaded the gears in the trany clatter together making a sound of marbles in a tin can. As for the cost of the job, a brand new factory clutch made by Luk (the OE manufacturer) is only 220.00. Labor should not be anymore than 8hrs on a 4x4 so figure another 500 labor. I wonder how much they hit you up for the flywheel.

Be very careful with your noise. The 99 and newer 6spd 7.3 trucks have had a notoriuos problem with premature failure of the disc and pilot brg. Approxiamately 1 out of 3 trucks we sold clutches for had to replace input shafts in them as well. The noise you describe sounds like a dry pilot brg. Does the whine increase with rpm's. If it does I would be pulling the trany fairly quicky, hopefully before the repair becomes very expensive. As for the cost on a 7.3 6spd depending on whether you chose a Luk upgrade or a factory clutch you will spend between 375 - 595 for the clutches and acc + around 500 for the labor. Let me know if you have any questions.
The noise is only heard when at idle. It goes away completely >~900 rpm's. It doesn't matter what gear I'm in though, it whiyyynns at idle speed in any gear. I just try to stay in a gear that lets me get the rpm's up a little when driving slow. I'll talk with my mechanic tomorrow and let you know what the qualatative diagnosis is.
