Help identifying part

So I need some help identifying a part. I've begun tearing down the top of my 460 due to the need to replace a head gasket (low compression between two cylinders). I've decided to go ahead take care of a lot of other stuff while I am at it, re-paint valve covers, new intake, and others. Additionally I am going to clean up all of my wiring...yeah, not going to be fun. Anyway, while pulling it all apart today one of the connectors disintegrated and I can't figure out exactly what part it is and I was hoping the gurus here could help. I think it's part of the EGR system but not 100%. It's in the picture below. Thanks.

It's an EGR solenoid.

As far as it being used for the EGR system, only your vacuum diagram can tell you that. You can trace the vacuum hoses and get a pretty good idea as well, as long as the routing is original.

Ford used EGR solenoids not only for EGR systems, but for Vacuum Advance, and Thermactor Controls, or anywhere they needed vacuum on and off switching.

Usually used in conjunction with a computer or control module.

Post the year and model of your 460, and Numberdummy or Mike might be able to help you further.

That looks to be the EGR solenoid vacuum valve. If I'm correct there should be a number similar to D5TE-9D474-F2A or something close on it.

So it's a 1978 F150 Ranger Trailer Special with a factory 460. I can post the VIN if that helps.

With what you've said so far, I'm thinking it's the PVS valve. Think it could be that?

No, don't think so. Check and see what numbers are the valve and post them.

Here's a picture of the EGR solenoid vacuum valve p/n D5TZ-9D474-F which is probably the one your truck takes.

I think you are spot on Mike, it's nearly impossible to read the entire part number but I can make out D5TE-??4?4-F2A.

Any ideas where I can get a replacement?

That's not actually a part number. Ford hasn't put the actual part number on parts since the early 50's. That's an engineering number and it can be crossed over to the actual part number, which in this case is D5TZ-9D474-F.
I'll do a search and see if I can locate any for you.

I've done searching myself and it looks like they run from $50 up to $100+, ouch. That's going to be especially annoying because all that broke on mine is the plastic housing for the electrical connector. Pic below

Okay, I located several NOS parts.
D5TZ-9D474-F EGR Solenoid valve.
Last list $74.20 Dealer cost $44.52

Gus Machado Ford, Hialeah, FL has 3 (305) 822-8338
Bob Allen Ford, Overland Park, KS has 5 (913) 381-2999
Green Sales, Cincinnati, OH has 6 (800) 543-4959
Wesley Obsolete Parts, Liberty, KY has 1 (606) 787-5293
NOS Parts Source, Olathe, KS has 1 (913) 220-5476

A couple of things. If you call Bob Allen, be sitting down when you ask the price. They have a terrible reputation on ripping people off price-wise on obsolete parts.
You might try Gus Machado in Hialeah, FL. They offer obsolete parts to other dealers at 30% OFF COST.
On obsolete parts dealers are stuck with them. They can't return them to Ford and they've probably been sitting on the shelf for years. They were written off years ago so the dealer has no money invested in them. Anything they get for them is pure 100% proffit.
Several times, on obsolete parts, the parts guy doesn't have a clue as to what it's worth and if you offer him a fair price, they'll take it.

Good to know the engineering part numbers aren't the same as actual part numbers. Is it common to just drop a couple digits at the end?

The 4th digit of the prefix is different, the suffies - could be one or two) are different. Sometimes the basic number is different.
