I have a 1983 f350 drw that will not go into reverse with the engine running. I have replaced the clutch with a new clutch kit and had the flywheel resurfaced. Before this it was hard getting into first alot of the time and now that is fixed but still no reverse. When I do try to shift into reverse I get alot of grinding and have to turn off the engine, shift and restart. Is the linkage bad? do I need a new flywheel or is something in the transmission itself going bad. Thanks
There is also some information on utube about the rod on the clutch master cyl. There may be a cheap plastic bushing at the rod's pivot point and the clutch lever. Apparently these fail quite often and can cause substantial wear which reduces the throw.
Your original statement on it not going into first before the clutch replacement but now not going into reverse after the clutch replacement shines different light on the subject. Did you loose any trans fluid (oil) when the clutch was changed?
I have found it common and generally acceptable practice to put the transmission in 2nd before first gear and 4th gear before going into reverse to stop the transmission from turning and prevent grinding. Every gear should have a synchronizer with the exception of reverse, maybe the synchronizer is worn or you have the wrong weight oil, or not enough oil; don't know. Hope my ramble helps you.
More than likely the sincro is out for reverse same thing happed to our shop truck. had new clutch and slave cylinder also but didn't have reverse after just getting truck all back together so trans had to come back out and get sincros fixed

Being an 83 that would be a T19 and to my knowledge i dont believe 1st or reverse is synchronized.

ZF are notorious for reverse issues, my current ZF has a bad revers you have to roll forward and slip it in reverse while its still just creeping forward to get it to fully engage.
a bit off topic sorry lol
