'94 F150,4wd,strt. 6, auto transmission. My neighbor is going to give me a set of nice 35",s. I don't want them, if this transmission won'y handle it. Your opinions.
We don't know for sure he's got the e4od. Might have the 4r70w. What are you using the truck for and are you going to re-gear? The f150's are generally fine up to 35" tires if you don't get too crazy off road.
These 6 cylinder equipped trucks are known to come with relatively low, numerically, gear ratios. It is not uncommon to find them with 3.08 gears. Combine that with 35" tires you are seriously reducing the effective gear ratio.
Before jumping off the deep end I suggest the OP look at the axle and transmission codes listed on the door jamb sticker before making any decision to install this tire/wheel combination.
I am not certain if the 4.9L engine ever came with a 4R70W?
Honestly I don't know if it was or wasn't but I know it was in the F150's, it's electronically controlled, and it's not as strong as the E4OD. Check the trans code on the door tag and look at the trans pan to see for sure.
Either way, if it's re-geared for the larger tires and he doesn't really thrash on it(doesn't have to really baby it either) it should be ok. Throw an extra large trans cooler on there just to be safe.
Look at the trans pan and then look at some pics on the internet of Ford tranny pans. Thats how I found out my trans! And if youve got 3.55s and under gear ratio, your definitly gonna wanna get some, at least, 4.10 gears. You wouldnt HAVE to get em but that truck will be such a dog... been there done that
That's why I am asking, they aren't free if I have to replace a lot of stuff or tear something up. I'm going to pick it up sometime this weekend and will let you know the codes so you can advise me further. Thank you for the help. Hopefully it's got the e4od.
I would grab 'em anyway. Can always trade them for something you do need, if the neighbor is cool with it. I'd feel weird about someone giving me something and turning around and selling it without running it by them.
something no has mentioned is that if your truck is sitting at stock height, you will need a lift kit or be prepared to do some trimming if you want to use the truck as a truck. Just another expense to your "free" tires.
You'll defiantly need to lift to run them. Probably 4" will clear them. Grab 'em and watch CL and the classifieds for a lifted F150 getting parted out.
Or watch for a cheap lifted truck with bald tires and slap 'em on that and flip it for a profit.
Not going to take them if they're not going on my truck, would feel weird doing that. I am going to make a custom winch bumper so I can make it around the tires and I will address any other lift issues accordingly if it doesn't look like it will be too expensive. Going to pick it up tomorrow afternoon so I will have the codes tomorrow night!
