Got a question and can't find the answer in other forums so I'd though I'd ask the experts here. Need to tow my 2wd 93 Ranger pickup behind a big moving truck from Texas to Mississippi. I'm thinking tow dolly, drop the driveshaft and go...carefully. Do I need to cap off the rear of the tranny after I pull the driveshaft...will it puke tranny fluid without the driveshaft installed. Thanks in advance.
Best bet is to leave shaft IN the truck. Disconnect at rear end and strap it up to the frame/crossmember. That way no fluid can be lost AND don't have to worry about where to store it.
Make sure you strap it up good!!! Don't want to loose it on the road either LOL!
Moved a 74 El Crapino from Arlington, TX to Destin, Fl on a rent-a-dolly.... we backed that puppy up on the dolly, locked the steering, AND tied the wheel off with rope for a backup.... (tow truck trick)
Your FLAPS should have a plastic cap just for what your doin, if they look at ya like your crazy, run across the the street to the tranny shop, he'll have one... but really now, pull the DS (tape up the outputshaft, dirt, grime, ect), and drain the tranny.... you need to change the fluid in it anyways, right?
I don't understand the reason to disconnect the driveshaft if the rearend is going on the dolly. Just hook some magnetic lights to the hood, lock the steering and tow it.
TM, Like da train, I disconnect the ds at the rear, pull it over to the side and tie it off with a forward pull to keep it in the tranny. When you arrive you should be able to reconnect and go with no issues.

The front will be on the dolly; ie the correct and safe way to use a tow dolly.
Another vote for disconecting the drive line from the rearend and strapping it up, done this a few times. Works like a charm.
Thanks guys...found a 12-point, 12mm socket that I'll get tomorrow...the little Rangers require it on the driveshaft nuts. I'll put the nose on the dolly, pull the DS and baling wire it up to the frame after I wrap and tape the tail...probably some rope, too. Gotta haul it 3 days chasing a new job opportunity...what's the old saying...a move and a fire accomplish about the same thing for thinnin' out your stuff.
