Is it possible to damage a manual tranny by flat-towing a vehicle with the tranny in neutral? A post on another website claims this isn't just possible but quite likely if the tranny is a NP435 - something about the 3rd gear wearing on its shaft due to insufficient lube splash/circulation.
I don't have a NP435, but I do have a t18. Does it have a similar vulnerability?
from your profile im guessing it is the 81 250 if so just put the t-case in neutral i am not sure about the tranny question but nothin in the tranny will be movine if you put the t-case in neutral.
A friend of mine and his wife have one of those huge RV's, and tow a jeep behind it for local driving when they park the RV. Two years ago when they started this, he brought the jeep down here and I welded to the bottom of the frame a driveshaft-sized "hook" on the inside of the frame towards the rear end. After hitching the truck, he takes the driveshaft off the rear axle and hangs the driveshaft on the hook, and puts a strap over it. Since it's a 2wd jeep that's all there is to it. And he can tow that thing endlessly without fear of any "we're away from our mechanic and it died" type problems.
If it's a 2wd, another option is to put the rear on a tow dolly, and drag the front.
