Got a good surprise today. A friend of my brother is giving me a 300 I-6. It's an '81 carbed version and he said it ran when pulled. No idea of miles on it. I'm thinking this would be good to put on the stand and build as a replacement for my ailing 6, but I am wondering if all my FI stuff will bolt up to it Ok. I know that my head has air tubes in it, and I may just re-use it anyway as it's still freshly gone through, but the additional head gives me visions of experimenting with porting. I had thought of getting rid of the air pump anyway, so any input? Will everything else work on my '94 truck without major headaches?
The old block doesn't have a hole for the knock sensor, does have a hole for a fuel pump, and has maybe a couple of other differences. But it'll probably work.
Why do you want to delete the smog pump? It doesn't hurt performance, and helps emissions.

I'd have to disagree with that. Anything that is going to be turned by the motor is going to steal HP. It's just a question of how much. If he can get way with it (no smog police?) I'd take it off. It also heats the air coming through the intake. Cooler air means more air going to the engine (a good thing!).
+ you're talking about a slow burn head setup with a fast burn ignition. If there's no smog police, scrap the FI and go Carby with a DII - my two cents.
i have a 92 f-150 i rebuilt the engine and took all of the smog equment off and it runs great. the air rail on the head is gone and i cut all of the inner part of the smog pump out.
