Anybody have a 460 in their truck with a 6" Air cleaner? it's gotta be a tight fit, but I have an almost brand new one my father gave me because it was laying around his house collecting dust.
Us old-school hot rodders like the look of the open-element air cleaner. It fits with our goal of having a neat and un-complicated under-hood area. And, there's nothing quite like an unsilenced intake. In fact, back in the 60's Detroit advertised that their muscle cars had an unsilenced air cleaner since we wanted to "hear the dual quads ring", as the song says.
But, the really serious muscle cars, like my '69 Super Bee, have a cold air inlet system with scoops on the hood. That provided a significant boost in power by supplying outside air, which was certainly cold when compared to the air around the engine. However, they were cable-controlled from inside the car, and were supposed to be closed in really cold weather. So, in a way they created a manually-operated version of the later vacuum-operated system, as described on that page.
Given that, why replace it with an open-element air cleaner and draw in cold air in the winter and hot air in the summer? I really meant what I said at the bottom of the page - if you don't want to use your system then ship it to me. Guys are having a tough time finding complete systems anymore as so many of them have gone to the crusher. So let's preserve what we can.
I can certainly vouch for the "Guys are having a tough time finding complete systems anymore as so many of them have gone to the crusher." It took me 6 months to find a decent, complete set-up.
I found a aircleaner on ebay still haven't bought it as it does not have the snorkel but I am not going to pay over $300 for a factory aircleaner even if its NOS.
but I know I am still running my oem one even though the base is all split to hell.
That's another thing is when I got the truck it wasn't running and there was no air cleaner setup, do you guys have a recommendation for a setup for a mild performance 460?

Yes - stock. See here: Air Cleaners - Gary's Garagemahal. Or, if you think your 460 will pull too much air, go for a dual-snorkel as I'm doing on Dad's truck. All the conveniences of stock with twice the flow capabilities.
Ford actually did a good job on the large diameter stock air cleaner, the large 460 housing flows quite well, and if memory serves a 14x3 filter can fit in it, I know I have a bigger than stock filter in mine. Even a lowly fram 14x3 flows 800 cfm.
The stock 460 filter housing on my truck had a neat vacuum operated door in the rear driver's side that opened under wot, this is long gone however due to the trucks useage and I run one from a 73 Ltd wagon with a 429, with an 86 351w HO lid just to confuse people... You would be surprised how many people believe the lid...
Another option might be an IDI air cleaner, it has a 11x5" filter stock.

Which is why the one on Dad's truck will say 400HO, mimicking the 351HO. And, with dual snorkels plumbed to the radiator support for cold air, using factory parts, it'll confuse a few people.
Hell I wish I could just find a stock aircleaner base for my 302 so I can junk that broken pos I have now that sucks more air from the round base than through the snorkel lol.
Almost had one from a customers old '82 at work but boss grabbed it for another customers truck before I could and used it there. I kicked myself for not grabbing it sooner.

Stock aircleaners! My '85 300-6 was missing the snorkel and I bought from Green Sales what was possibly the last NOS one in existence for $65! Yes, I paid $65 for it.
This is why I have a plea on the Air Cleaners page (Air Cleaners - Gary's Garagemahal) on my web site: Hopefully I've convinced you to retain the stock air cleaner for your truck. But, if not please send it to me as those who aren't educated in carburetion systems tend to throw them away.
I have one of thoses plastic snorkel boots as well as the one on my truck. Customer truck that we pulled the oem 302 out of for a 5.0 coyote engine I gutted what was not needed and kept what was worth keeping.
I just didn't get the aircleaner which was mint and not split like mine cause boss grabbed it for another customers truck.
