My '96 F250 7.3L has set still for 2 years. It was cranked frequently and she purrs like a kitten. However, I went to throw it in gear (automatic) and it doens't move, no gear engages, revving doesn't make it chunk into gear and it is full of fluid. Now it is spinning because when I try to put it back in park it makes that awful ratcheting sound you hear if you try and put one in park while it's moving. Any ideas?? Please someone tell me this is something simple?!?!?!?!
Is it a 4x4? It sounds like the trans is engaging, but the power isn't getting to the wheels. If it is a 4x4 I think the problem is in the transfer case. If not, then I don't know.
All good points... I'll re-check, but I'm pretty sure it's in 2H. If the x-fer was in neutral I should still be able to go to park without any problems though, right?
You should be able to shift into park but it wont hold, it will roll. If you select a gear like forward or reverse first and then go to park you will hear a ratcheting sound like you mention in your first post.

it wont roll on flat ground if the disc and drums have rust on them keeps the wheels from turning with lots of friction
Okay... finally got back it, between work and building the new garage. Turns out the xfer case is in neutral and I can't budge it one way or the other. I got under the truck and soaked it with PB Blaster and tried tapping it in either direction, nothing. So, is this a common issue or just results of sitting for so long and is there a fix? I mean other than oiling, beating, shaking, rattling, heating, etc.... ;-)
Try pushing the truck a foot or two, just to turn the rear driveshaft a little, and try hand-turning the front driveshaft, just to see if that frees anything up in the T-case to allow it to shift. Otherwise, it may be in the linkage. Can you see from below, whether the detent pin that requires you to push the lever down for Neutral might be stuck on the little block-out plate?

It is between the detents and up and down movement is fine, but no matter what will not move laterally. I tried the ds and moving the whole truck but I can't turn the shaft or budge the truck. Would hooking it to the F350 and budging it cause a problem, ya think?
