UPDATE - OK, it is NOT my driver side, it is my pasenger side and it seems that the needle bearings that surround the axle shaft are SHOT. I was at the cabin this weekend and it was getting worse and worse, it grinds in 2wd and 4wd. I sprayed the SNOT out of them with some spray lube and it quieted down for about 100 miles, but is now grinding again. I plan on replacing the bearing this weekend. What do I need to know and what do I need to get and what do I need to do? Any and all suggestions would be most helpful. There are LOTS of different part numbers for this bearing, fine thread, coarse thread, etc. Any specifics that I need to know about? Any good write ups? THANKS!
If your needle bearing is really torn up...and it's been like that for awhile, it may have messed up the hub itself. The replacement bearing itself is available if your hub hasn't been torn up...wasn't so lucky when mine went out! Call Riffraff diesel, they will know what bearing you need. The bearing lives in the back of the hub so i would imagine you will need to remove the hub which isn't hard. here is a link: Ford Super Duty Ball Joint Replacement Procedure | Superdutypsd.com
you will only need to do steps 11 through 15 to remove the hub. I've done this several times on different trucks, step 14 shows a large puller...if you WD40 the hub real good where it bolts in the back you can carefully just work it right off w/ a thick 1" paint type scraper.
Thanks for the link. I actually bought an entire new hub / bearing. I found a Timken bearing at AutoZone for a little under 190.00. I figure it is time to do the entire unit. I will be tackling it this weekend. Thanks for all the info.
I replaced my front wheel bearing on Saturday. It went very well. No issues or problems. The truck is nice and quiet and no noise, no shuddering, no grinding. All good!
