Okay, so just when I think I'm done working on my 94' idi something else comes up. I drove my boat down to the lake yesterday and when I got off the freeway the off light started to blink on my od cancel switch. Got back home to check it out and it would shift hard when put in gear. Drove it the next day and it was fine for awhile, then started blinking and shifting into gear hard again, fine for a few minutes, then blinking......... The tach has always had a problem and does not show rpm until about 1200. The only thing that changed recently before this trip is that I noticed the needle jump up and at times where it didn't before. Something seemed to change a little in the transmission when it did that and I started to think the torque convertor was going out. I installed a used tach sensor that I've had around as a spare and it only changed it slightly. Now the off light comes on only when the tach needle drops off at 1200 rpm and it does it consistently. I'm not sure where the e4od gets it's input from the tach, from the gauge on the dash or from the sensor. I can probably go to a wrecking yard and get another gauge cluster but I thought I'd get some thoughts from you guys before doing that.
I do have a 95' psd gauge cluster. I don't think they are the same but I might go out and check.
you need a 100% functioning tach signal to the pcm or she'll go in limp mode.
the harsh shift while the light is flashing is normal and doesn't necessarily (in fact, rarely) mean the converter nor any hard part is malfunctioning.start with a new (another good used) tach sensor.once the issue is resolved, and the light no longer flashes, the firm shifts will go away.
Thanks. Yeah, I figured it wasn't the converter after it started working right again. Hard to find the tach sender. You happen to know where I can get one? I haven't called the dealership yet because I hate dealing with those guys.
I had a problem with my Tach sensor being intermittent. The isulation was bad where the wires went into sensor. I seperated and sealed wires with liquid electrical tape. I have had no problems since.
I'll try sealing the wires and see what happens. Thanks for the tip. I'm going to call the stealership on Monday and see if they carry the sensor. I have a deer hunt to go on and I can't wait for a part to ship, or at least I hope I don't have to. I still think it is the sensor because it changed a little when I put in a different one. Can't be sure though. I did test both and I cant get any resistance numbers unless I wiggle the wires around and the numbers are all over the place.
