idi tach and stumble issues..help

Hi all, yeah i bought me another ole idi... this time i picked up a really nice 1993 f350 crew cab 7.3 automatic.
Shes a cream puff!! was originally a show truck and i make the 3rd owner now. shes got 188k on the clock, never used for towing or construction. it was built in canada. and has that fancy package like the centurion. ok enough intro. I just picked her up today and drove it home from ohio 370 miles one way. she ran wonderful and only used about a tank and quarter of fuel. but i noticed a couple things im certain you gurus can shed light on for me.
A. at idle it doesnt register rpms on tach, tach jumps right up as soon as you give her the pedal.
B. at cruising speed I will be exact here cause i watched it for 370 miles..lol at 68 mph @2200 rpm if you let up on the pedal ever so slightly i noticed a stumble almost like a miss, if i pushed the throttle it went away, kinda like a carburetor engine with a flat spot.
C. i also noticed to as i was accelerating hard on a entrance ramp it didnt want shift out 1st, so i let up then it shifted to second then all was ok. that was one isolated incident i did not notice that again,
D. sometimes not always i notice a harsh up shift.

Im not complaining because it actually ran quite well, and was real pleasure to drive. i just know someone will know what some of these issues are. thanks all

com'on you gurus!! lol
i did research on google and seems like the tach issue may be caused by the Tachometer sender?? apparently it screws in somewhere out by the Injector pump and has 2 wires to it? I will look tonight

also seems the failure of the tach sender causes the od light to flash at idle when no rpms present.. Help guys

you need a new sensor. it looks like a large nut with 2 wires coming out of it. its on the right side of the oil filler neck.

Yup, and you'd have the E4OD tranny, witch relies on that tach sensor to operate correctly.

Is your OD light flashing?

Mine was acting the same way (read 0 rpm's at idle) and had no OD light. Trans did seems to shift ever so weird once and a while. Added a new tach sensor, boom. Trans shifts like butter now.

Yep i got one ordered from Ford today, be in tomorrow morning. Guess they know what their doing cause the guy came out to my truck and got the VIN numbers.. said they can be diffrent according to vin. Im hoping like you guys are indicating that this will straigten up the erratic shifting as well.
Yes the od light on the shift lever would flash at idle, then go out when accelerating.

yeah its an e40d.. I know how they are i blew one years ago on 90 dually crew with a 5.8 on the interstate she puked all fluid out at about 65mph at 2 in the morning. that was long cold night...
I had a c-6 in my 87 f250 idi. the only issue there was she was taching 3000 rpm at 65 mph, would haul anything though and not die down.

thanks for the input guys i will keep yall posted!!

you should also change the speed sensor on the rear end. Its one wire 2 screws and $30. The trans uses it also to tell it when to shift. If any of the sensors on that trans are messed up it can kill your transmission.

Check the Fuel position sensor on the driver side of the injector pump. It can also mess with the transmission.

There is a running 7.3 engine here, and 2wd ZF5 for 400$ here, still in truck and can be tested before buying.

I'm getting some ideas here

Since I have a steering column/clutch brake pedal assembly for a Ford van.......

I'd rather have a 4x4 ZF5 just for the transfercase for the camper though, when parking or driving up on wood blocks to level out, I can just stick it in low range to save the clutch.

But if I do end up going ZF from C6, i'm also gonna need a new gear set, if I go ZF, I want 4.56 gears, witch will give me about the same ~2500RPM that the C6/3.54 gives me right now at cruising speeds witch is want. At least I'll have more gears to keep the RPM in the power band for hills and such.
