Have any of you had experience with Dorman Products, Ford 6.0 oil coolers? They’re about half the cost of the OEM replacement coolers, good deal if the quality is there.
I have a 2003, March built F 250, 6.0 that has 90k+ miles on it, most of those miles are from pulling a fifth wheel camper. I have not had any problems with the truck other than having to remove and clean the turbo every other year. After reading all the 6.0 horror stories I decided to go through the EGR and oil cooler. I was expecting to find the EGR cooler near failure and the oil cooler plugged, I was surprised to find how clean everything is…
Anyway, I decided to install the EGR delete kit and put everything back together but I just had see how the oil cooler worked. While removing the cooler from the housing assemble, I bent one of the plate frame cooler nozzles just above the top O-Ring. (tapping on it using a socket to push the cooler out ) It’s probably ok but I’m not taking a chance. (I do not want to breakdown on the road) So if anyone has used the Dorman oil cooler I would appreciate the feedback.
I really do not have a positive answer on the damage but can say, do not throw parts at something. The reason to replace is if the spread on coolant and oil temps reach 15 degrees or over. A great tool, we have many threads on the subject, is ScanGauge. Check it out for a good investment and peace of mind.
