2012 F-350 PS CC 4X4 LB towing capcity with changes?

Hi guys,

Love the forum,

So here's the deal, Im looking at upgrading from my 09 F-150 to the 2012/13 F-350. When i look at fords towing capacities i see that they dont list the 3.73 gearing with this set up.

My question is:

Can i install the 3.73 gears in the truck and achieve the same tow capacity as the Dually?

Thanks

Welcome - and congrats on moving up to a REAL truck!

I'm not really sure what you're asking, are you buying a single rear wheel 250/350 but want the same tow ratings as a dually? If so it's not going to happen. It's not the gears that give the dually the higher rating it's the rear axle (Dana 80) which has substantially higher capacity than the Sterling 10.5 in the SRW trucks.

Maybe give an idea of what you're wanting to use it for so we can give some better advice, but if you need the tow ratings of a dually, then you need to buy the dually.

Thanks for the welcome.

Here is a post i put on another forum:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Good day everyone. Ive been researching and researching but now I've just gone and confused myself.

Truck Part:

2012 F-350 Crew 4X4 Diesel Long box.
I have been reading this page for information but im kinda confused.
2012 Ford Super Duty | View Towing Specifications | Ford.com

It shows under the

F350 w/3.73 axle Ratio a GCWR of 30000LBS.
F-350 SRW 4X2 21900lbs for 5th wheel. But in the column beside it it just has a line. Does that mean it has the same weight capacity for the 4X4 SRW?

It shows a Cargo capacity of 3790LBS (This would be hitch weight capacity right)

Trailer Now:

http://www.forestriverinc.com/nd/def...eries=XLRAMPFW

XLR Thunderbolt AMP Fifth Wheel Model 380AMP
Dry Hitch Weight 2,323 lb. (1,054 kg )
Dry Ship Weight 15,268 lb. (6,925 kg )
GVWR 18,000 lb. (8,165 kg )

Would this trailer be safely towable behind the truck?

Thank you for your time

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Basically im trying to get that trailer without the need for a dually since as a daily driver the dually is well more of a pain to be gentle

^^^This is correct.

Do some reading here:

6.7L Power Stroke Diesel - Ford Truck Enthusiasts Forums

Plenty of us have SRW F-350s and if I needed that kind of towing capacity, I would have bought the dually.

What exactly are you wanting to tow with it?

EDIT: Just read your post. That's too heavy for an SRW F-350. Some will say you can do it, don't worry about it, no problem, etc., etc. With that kind of weight, you need the dually.

You've got to look past the rear gearing as was mentioned above. It's the rear axle capacity that's important and a key difference between the DRW and SRW. The dry ship weight of the fifth wheel isn't a huge problem but that's an empty weight. As soon as you start loading gear in it, it's going to gain weight and you'll be over the safe capacity of the SRW truck.

There's nothing you can do aftermarket to legally increase the capactiy. Can you live w/ a regular cab or maybe a 2wd? Those would bump the ratings a bit, but you'd still be pretty tight. If you could get an actual weight on the trailer (don't trust the dealer) it might help, at least give you an idea of how much room you would (or wouldn't) have left for water & gear. Assuming the actual trailer is close to the dry weight and you wouldn't need to haul a lot of water and gear you might squeak by on the tire and axle ratings. Probably going to need air bags to level the rear, that's still a lot of weight.

Heh I dont know if the kids would enjoy being in the box lol.

That was the dream trailer but I do have another more reasonably priced unit we loved as well.

KZ Recreational Vehicles: Inferno 3410T

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight) 11,035
Dry Hitch Weight 2,160
Dry Axle Weight 8,875
NCC (Net Carrying Capacity) 3,165
GVWR 14,200

That trailer fits into the tow capacity of the SRW.

Lol, perhaps not. Or more specifically mom wouldn't enjoy them back there!

That trailer would easily fit into the range of a SRW, heck that's even within the range of the 6.2 gas engine. Nothing wrong w/ saving money... then you can buy more toys!!

Good luck, let us know what you decide and be sure to post pics!
