I have come to the piont where I need to make some major decisions. I am considering hauling my own feed from our supplier bout 250 miles away. Looking at hauling 25,000 lbs to really make it feasible. Question; is there any way an F-350 SRW can haul that much weight, would a dually be able to? I think this is too much weight but thought I would ask some of the experts. This would be a 3 times a week over some modest terrain, few hills, but only two of them close to steep and long. Any help would be great. Or should I break down and buy a straight truck and become a real truck driver?
25,000 pounds is beyond the legal capability of an F-350 or even an F-450. You need to move up into a large truck category for that kind of towing/hauling.
You can get an F-450 DRW 4x2 with an automatic and 4.88 gears. That'll give you 24,500 pounds of towing capacity on a 5th wheel/gooseneck tow. That's as good as it gets unless you move into the heavy truck category.
So it appears that the engine does not change from an F250 to an F450. So the frame and running gear may be the upgrades on an F550. But it's looking more and more like a flat deck straight truck is in my future. Any suggestions on that. Should I stick with a ford product or should I be looking at something else? My license will allow me to operate a tandem truck with up to a 45,000lb trailer but I have no air brake certificate. Hmm the choices, the choices.
Not sure about your driving experience, but remember that unless there is a farm exemption in your state, ANYTHING over 26,000 gross vehicle weight requires a CDL. Any combination over 26,000 lbs with a trailer GVW of over 10,000 lbs requires a Class A CDL....
Here in Nova Scotia, a class three license allows operation of a striaght truck GVW 10,000lbs and combination truck trailer with trailer weight of 45,000lbs or less. I also have a farm exemption for hauls of farm feed or product of 20% over weight when roads are open and it is direct from feild or maufacturer. What is the CDL?
A CDL is a Commercial Driver's License, which is required to operate a vehicle which hauls a reportable quantity of hazmat, can carry more than 15 people, or has the capacity of weighing more than 26,000 lbs.
