I have a 98 ClubWagon 12 passenger van, today I was putting it in reverse to back into a parking spot and when i got to neutral i heard a pop and now the gear selector moves freely and I am unable to select a gear. It is an automatic with the 5.4l V8 engine. Never had a problem like this before looking for some help as to what possibly could have broken and how hard/easy it would be to fix. Thanks
i've seen that happen on a variety of vehicles. i know that on the older vans (75-91), there was a rod that dropped down from the column to the tranny.
i haven't checked, but i suspect this was updated to a cable linkage for your time period.
an any case, that linkage from the shifter to the tranny has either broken or come disconnected.
for an emergency trip from wherever you are to home, start the van, drop the shifter into first, then hold the brakes while a friend crawls under the van and manually tells the tranny what gear position to go into. you'll have to repeat this process every time you have to manually shift until you fix it.
