I have a 1993 Ford Econoline E250 it's got lots of miles on it and is a real workhorse. I have a problem with the automatic gear shift. I had a mechanic about 4 years ago fix it because the gear shift lever was real sloppy and you couldn't really tell what gear you were in. Now it's back again and my mechanic has retired. No matter where I put the gear shift it won't start. The only way I can start it is to pull down on the gear shift lever and turn the key on at the same time. When it hits the right spot it will start. I again never know what gear I am in and when I stop I have to put the emergency brake on. While it is running I can find neutral but I can't find park. I have fooled with the adjustment for the pointer for the gear selector and that does nothing. I have no idea where the two torx's screws are that people talk about. I can see the ones in front of the plate on the steering shaft prior to the universal joint. I have pulled everything off looked with a flashlight and still can find anything. Any ideas?
It won't start because the neutral safety switch isn't lined up right (that'd be my guess). It also sounds like you have a lot of play in the shifter. That can affect this but check neutral safety first. The pointer adjuster is just that...a pointer. The pointer isn't the problem
You were just the person I was looking for. I knew there were 2 torx's that needed to be tighten but the only ones I could see were the two just behind that plate were the u-joint is. I was able to reach up and find that arm then I took a look or actually a feel and found only one screw. I kind of figured one fell out. I search all over to find it and finally found it under the front mat. Once I put it in and tightened it up as tight as I could the shifter worked just like new. I had to adjust the pointer for PRND because I had fooled around with it. I also purchased a flexible extension so I can tighten those to torx and then I am going to put a drop of super glue on the back end.
Thank you I really appreciate you help and the picture was perfect. The other answer wasn't even close. I was able to start the van by pulling down on the gear shift and turning the key at the same time. That should have been a clue that it wasn't the neutral switch.
