I was shifting the column shifter yesterday when all of the sudden it felt as if something had broken loose. The shifter had no tension at all and was easily pulled back and forth (toward the driver) and rests in the D position. The no tension part is from full left until it reaches drive, where the shifter will finally rest by itself. The van will not go into park or reverse but will go in neutral, od and d, so I know the linkage itself did not break. Has anyone else ever had this happen before? Is it going to be hard to fix? The pointer is also stuck to the far right since this happned. I have to drive this van to North Carolina from Michigan right after Christmas so I need o get it fixed.
Sounds like something in the linkage. Do not start the van. Crawl under the van and watch the linkage arm on the side of the transmission while some one moves the gear lever back & forth. If the linkage moves back & forth the problem is likely in the transmission. If no movement or very little than something in the linkage is broken before the transmission. Wiggle the the linkage shaft & see if it feels loose. If all seems tight there I would suspect something topside where the shift arm is connected to the cable.I also have a 93 but never had this problem. Good luck.
There are not a lot of people who read this post so you do have to be a bit patient. I'm pretty sure I know exactly what happened, your shift tube broke. It's the housing that goes around the shaft that runs between the selector lever and the attatchment to the cable. You will have to drop the steering column (don't need to remove it). As I recall there are some bolt that hold the housing in place and then one in the back of the shaft. Parts aren't too bad, maybe $40? The new one is obviously stronger.
Good luck, less than 2 hours if you are as good as I am!
