Coolant leak

Hello all, nothing to be alarmed about, I'm just letting y'all know I have a coolant leak on the front of the motor. It leaks about 8oz. Of fluid/week.

I have been through the radiator issues, 5 in all on my '08 and 1 on my '11 at 52,000 miles. This one is different, I'm pretty sure it's the water pump.

I'll give the official word as soon as I can get it diagnosed. I guess it's because I tow all the time, nothing real heavy, just everyday use. Truck is hardly ever on its own.

I lost my primary water pump at 22,000 miles. I think you have the right idea. I crawled under my truck and was able to see where the antifreeze was coming from. The water pump is difficult to see clearly like most everything on this motor. Hope you get it repaired soon, the leak will just get worse. Good luck.

The water pump doesn't know if your towing or not. It's just turning and pushing coolant.

Well, it's the primary water pump. Leaking at the pulley shaft is what they saw, I don't know the part well enough to know what the possibilities are otherwise.

My extended warranty is paying for itself! Glad we have it.

And yes, I know components don't think or have consciousness. I tend to push a lot of air driving on the interstates with trailers which burns a lot of fuel which creates a lot of heat which makes the pump push hot coolant for many hours. (2,795 in total) Maybe it's not any different than anyone else's duty cycle but as stated above, 5 radiators on my '08 and 1 on my '11 and now a pump. I'm seeing more coolant system problems than anyone else I have known or read about.

I'm at 34,000 and have been debating that extended warranty but I guess at this point, it's worthwhile to have since the cutoff is 35,999.

Thanks for the heads up. I will check mine. The only fluid problem I seem to have is that my engine oil seems to increase.

Aren't you the guy that had problems with the High Pressure Fuel Pump???

Ruschejj,

If you only had radiator problems with the 6.4, consider yourself lucky. Try 5 cab offs in less than 36k miles. The 6.7 is treating me way better. Still fuming that Florida lemon Law is limited to 250's and smaller.

I never have had a problem with any ford truck outside of the coolant systems.

And I do consider myself lucky. For the record.

That's great to hear Joel! Can I ask how much this would cost if it weren't for the warranty?

I think that your water pump is a casualty of 112,000 miles rather than the specific type of operation that you do. Most of the time when water pumps fail it's not because of anything mechanically breaking, but the shaft seal becomes worn to the point where it can no longer prevent fluid from seeping out. Not sure about these, but on older models there was a tiny reservoir with a weep hole at the top; the idea was to catch the normal seepage that makes it past the seal until it evaporated. The weep hole was an indicator hole, as if enough coolant ever leaked out that it came out the weep hole the seal was letting too much coolant seepage through and it's time for a new water pump.

And Ken, I believe you're thinking of Rickatic with the HPFP problems.

I will let y'all know how much the repair would cost once it is done. I need to make a run to Charlotte on Monday so the repair won't happen until Tuesday or Wednesday.

I removed a CT scanner from a clinic at north side hospital in Atlanta yesterday, loaded it into our fifth wheel cargo trailer, and have to deliver it to the buyer on Monday up in Charlotte. These systems weigh around 4 tons all together, so my trailer being about 5 tons empty with 4 tons in it makes for a nice 18,000 load. It could be 16k, I don't bother with scales much anymore so don't get tied up in exact figures.

I'll keep y'all updated.
