I recently picked up a 1993 E250 Cargo van to tow my Miata to autox events. I have a steady CEL once the van reaches 20mph. It runs and shifts fine. There are no other warning lights. Any idea on what might be causing this?
How right you are. The truck has no battery in it at the moment. I thought I would ask on the off chance this was a well known problem. I will pull the codes this weekend when I replace the battery.
After installing the battery and taking it for a drive the check engine light came on when I reached 20MPH. Pulled out the old test light (I've had it for 40 some-odd years) and pulled the codes. What I pulled has me somewhat confused. The test light initially flashed very rapidly 3 or so times then gave the following counts:
quick flashes - 5/5/8/5/5/8 - long pause - 1/3/3/2/6/3/4/3/3/2/6/3/4
My guess are codes 55, 85, 58, 33, 26, & 34. Am on the right track or totally wrong?
You are right. The first three codes are called on demand codes. That means the PCM sees those errors when the test is running. Those are a problem right now. The last three, the ones after the 1 code (called the separator code) are stored in memory. They were not seen during the test, but happened when the truck was running. Sometimes those tests only run when the truck is driving, they don't run during self test.
26 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) or Vane Air Flow (VAF) out of range - MAF VAF
33 - EGR did not open/ respond during test or if memory code, did not open intermittently - EVP EVR PFE
34 - EVP - EGR did not respond properly during test - EVP
55 - No or low (under 7 5 V) Key Power to PCM pin 5
58 - Idle Tracking Switch (ITS) signal problem ISC
85- This one doesn't make sense. There is no 85 for your truck.
your truck uses 3 digit codes. You are looking at a 558, 332 and 634.
DTC 558 EGR vacuum regulator solenoid/circuit failure - EVR or PFE or Solenoids
DTC 332 EGR did not open/respond during test or if memory code, did not open intermittantly -
DTC 634 Park/Neutral Position (PNP) or Clutch Pedal Position (CPP) circuit fault Electronic shift transmission - Manual Lever Position (MLP) sensor out of range in Park-Transmissions
Sounds like the EGR solenoid is bad or disconnected. That would also cause the DTC 332.
For the DTC 634, you may also need a new MLPS which is on the LH side of the trans and tells the ECM where your shifter is, you know, PRNOD21.
Apparently "this weekend" hasn't arrived yet. I still haven't looked further mainly because I only drive it 100 miles or so a month and I have been busy with other projects around the house. I will however post what I find since it does bug me when threads aren't followed up with what the actual repairs were.
