Sell or Keep? What would you do?
Hi Guys,
Well I've been debating this for some time and figured I'd get some other opinions. I've had my truck since new and have 161,000km on the clock. It's been tuned since 7000km and I've been religious with my maintenance on it. I've been debating moving into a new truck for a couple months now but am wondering if it's the smart move?? My truck has been unbelievably reliable and will get a consistent 17-18MPG. My thinking is that I'd get more for the truck now with 160,000 vs waiting a yr and selling it with 200,000. The truck is paid off and I make enough on the truck running it for my business that the cost isn't much of a concern.
I was planning on getting in to a new 6.7l SD but have a few buddy's with new Dodge Longhorn's and am really impressed with the interiors on them. That being said they still ride rougher and have their own set of problems from what I can see. I've been VERY happy with my truck since day 1, I'm just looking to get into something newer with a few more options. On the other hand I'd be more than happy to drive mine for another year. Just wondering what the best decision would be and if I'd be better to sell it now and get a few more dollars out of it. Thanks

Its a business decision for sure since you use it to make money. So do you need it (new truck) for tax purposes? If so then maybe a happy comprise and go for around Oct/Nov when they are being offered at some discounts.
Otherwise I am inclined to wait till after the first of the year.

No I don't need it and have enough write off's as it is. Like I said I would simply like a few more options. I know the best time to buy is in the fall which is why if I don't sell it in the next couple months then I would keep it until this time next year. I was just looking for everyone's opinion as to whether selling it now with 160km made that much more sense than selling it with 200km on it.
Sounds like it's a matter of personal preference if I'm reading this right :-)
100Kmiles seems to be a psychologically significant number here in the States. Maybe 200Kmeters is the next?? Or does it
really matter after 100K?
I think the next-generation SD's are due in, what, 2015(??) They're already speculating the F150 is going to use aluminum frames to reduce weight; I'm sure the same will ripple over to the SD's. Maybe 500hp/1000ftlbs stock and getting 30mpg while towing isn't unimaginable. LOL

Thanks for the input guys, it is personal preference for sure. Personally I'd like to wait until Ford starts making the Harley Davidson SD's again but no one seems to know when that will be. I think in the end I'll end up holding on to it for another year and then see what the market has to offer. Unless I walk into a dealership and they offer a smokin deal on a new one. I guess it probably won't matter much either way seeing as how the world is ending on Dec 21st, lol
I would keep it until the new design comes out. I am really impressed with the 6.7 and my truck is also paid off. The tranny/motor combo is really impressive in the mountains but as I said, no payment is more impressive. I don't like the Dodge only due to the payload and smaller crew cab but it is really a personal preference and what you need to use the truck for.

Good points, does anyone know when the new design is actually supposed to be available? I really only need a 1/2 ton for work as I drive 98% highway and rarely tow but I often have access to free diesel and I like the security I feel when driving a 1 ton versus an F150. I put on 40-50,000km a yr so it's nice to feel like I'm driving something that's built strong enough to save my life, should I ever end up in a wreck. I know of course there are a lot of variables but that is my general opinion. Plus we plan to start doing more camping once my boys are a few years older so I'll need the diesel then to pull the 5th wheel I have in mind

I don't think Dodge will have a DEF system until MY2013 so you might want to keep that in mind, too.
Of course, that's not far from release I'm sure.
In my opinion if you are going to leave the emissions installed (or have to) you want a DEF equipped modern diesel.

Can't comment on the safety part of it. The F150 is supposedly rated very highly for safety. The big SD's might give a false sense of security since they aren't subject to the same safety requirements as cars. But of course, I rather be in the heavier vehicle.
