Oil Leak???

The past month my truck has started leaking oil. The leak is right behind the oil pan. I don't see anything from on top, but only right behind the oil pan from underneath. Thinking it may be the Rear Seal. I've done a search, but couldn't find much info about it. My father-inlaw has a lift and was going to help me with it. If you could post some tips, info, and anything I need to check or replace while under there would be appreciated.

Thanks
Chad

Look way in the back of the valley of the engine under the turbo, The rear main is not common to leak. How ever the turbo pedestal o-ring are a common leak area, as well as the ebpv shaft coming out of the pedestal.

The reason you couldn't find anything on the rear seal leaking, is because it is so rare that the real seal leaks.

Like Richard said, get back on top of the engine with a flashlight and look under everything to the botom of the valley. I'm sure you will find oil in there.

When you find a little puddle of oil on the lip of the valve cover, plan on replacing the o-rings that seal the HP oil rail or the turbo pedastal. It usually leaks from one or more of the plugs.
The oil rail (at idle) is about 500psi, while at running speed it is about 3000psi. A small leak from the heads at idle is a MAJOR leak at 1500rpm. I recently fixed an o-ring leak that was dumping about 1gal every 50-75 miles. It appeared to come from the rear main seal because the valley between the heads (where it was leaking) drains down the back of the engine block just past the rear main and out of the bottom of the bell housing.

The Ford part number for the oil rail o-rings I use is F4TZ-9N693-A. There is a sponsor on here that carries them, but my local Ford shop had them in stock.

There is also a sponsor on here (same one, I think) that carries the pedestal o-rings for less than Ford. I don't have that part number.

I've been working alot here lately and havent had much time to get under the hood. I glance today under there, and seen some fluid under the fuel filter. I couldnt tell if it was oil or fuel. It looked like oil. I've also read it could be coming from the HPOP? My father-in-law is gonna help me. If its the turbo, or HPOP how hard is this to fix? Are there any links that that show how to do this?

Thanks
Chad

Most of the oil leaks (or fuel leaks that drip and look like oil because they pickup the sludge off the engine) are simple o-rings that just need to be replaced.

Yes we can help you with a "how to", or you can just buy the replacement from Dieselorings.com and use the instructions that come with most of his parts, or the instructions printed on his website.

But first, you need to determine if it is fuel or oil that is puddling and dripping. If you can't get your hand down there, tape a piece of rag on the end of a stick and dip it down in the puddle. Use the sniff test to determine if it's oil or fuel. Then clean things up and narrow down where the leak is coming from so you know which o-rings to buy.

Yup, just wait, slow down. We'll help you get the right parts together before the job so your all set when its torn apart.

If you can get in there with a camera and take some pictures of the oil puddles and around the valley area and post them up. Clean everything up good and dry again then watch with the truck running for a bit to see if you can find where it starts getting wet first.

My first oil leak was from one of the high-pressure fittings on the back of the high pressure oil pump, one of the ones that feeds the hoses. That was a relatively easy fix. My CURRENT oil leak is from the "non-replaceable" plug on the bottom of the HPOP. That one will take a little more time, as it requires removal of the HPOP.

I think you will find that there is oil in the valley, and it's dripping through the weep hole on the rear passenger side and down to the back of the engine.

Thx for all the good replies. I’ll clean her up and get some pictures around the valley.

however, I’m planning to open it up in a week or two so I do need to order parts for MOD projects while I’m in there.

I did not see any mention of how bad the leak is. It doesn't sound too severe if you've waited 3 months to fix it. So that is a good sign. From my experience, an HPOP gasket or oil rail seal is a major leak. You can lose a gal of oil in no time.

It will be interesting to see what you find
