My 1996 F250 7.4L DI with about 115,000 miles has developed an oil leak and I could use some advice.
The oil appears underneath on the cover between the automatic transmission and the engine, and up the right side by the base of the starter to the rear of the oil pan.
I've looked in the channel between the cylinder banks and under the turbo, and it's dry.
I'm guessing it's the rear main seal. Does this make sense? Is it more likely to be something else?
If it is the rear main seal, how hard/expensive is this to fix?
First, are you sure it's oil & not fuel? If it's oil, check the rear oil gallery plugs on the back of each head, behind the up pipes. They have o-rings that can go bad, or they can loosen and leak. If it's fuel check everything in the engine valley. There is a drain hole in the rear of the valley on the passengers side where a leak will run down the back of the engine.
Wouldn't there be oil in the channel under the turbo if the o-rings in the pedestal were leaking? I've tried to look as thoroughly as I can, and I can't see any oil in that region.
I looked at the back of the heads, and it doesn't appear to be leaking there, either, and I don't think it's fuel. It definitely looks, feels and smells like oil.
I had an oil pan crack just under the main seal. Metal fatigue was the culprit.
Take the transmission check cover off and spray the seal and around it with some brake cleaner and run the engine to observe leakage. Keep fingers and tools away from the spinning flywheel!
