Something got on my dash board and ate some of the paint off. I don't know what it was. It was a very sticky substance but when I cleaned it the paint came off too. Now I have a dash board with smeared paint and some black spots showing through. I remember someone putting a sandwich and some sun screen up there but nothing that would eat the paint off. It is on the passenger side (off course) right above the air bag on the grey part of the dash (not the part that the radio is mounted in). It looks like the piece that makes up the majority of the dash board. Has anyone ever taken this piece out or replaced it? It looks a little difficult to remove but not too bad. Anyone know the part number or how much it would cost for a new one? Or has anyone had any luck repainting the dash? Damn this crap sucks.
I had a problem with some sunscreen left smeared on the dash of a restored CJ-5 -- turns out it was the new, improved stuff with DEET insect repellant included. It will definitely eat plastic and paint if left in place for long -- and not very long at that! Kids wearing DEET on their hands took the paint off the door of chebby 1500 down the street from constantly grabbing the handle and getting it on the area around it. I would not be surprised if their were other things found in sunscreen that might have similar, if less spectacular, effects on plastic or paint.
Out of curiosity and caution, where did you get the sandwich?
Before you run out and buy a new piece, it may be to your benefit to at least try the dealer.
Edit: I'd really get after the dealer on this........if there's a problem putting stuff on the dash, we should have been told before purchasing.
Another thought..............I used an upholstery "paint" a number of years ago to change the colour of a dash and door panels, and it worked well. I saw a spray-on product in Canadian Tire the other day in grey and black interior colours. I know you guys don't have C/T in Washington, but somebody's got to stock something similar down there.
Show me in the book where it says I can't put a bottle of sunscreen on my dashboard...............OR...............show me on the sunscreen where it says not to put the bottle on my dashboard
Maybe there's a TSB on this somewhere. You can't be the only one it's happened to!
I'll give it a shot. I made an appointment for Friday. I have a tear in my seat I need to talk about with them anyway. I'll post the results. Thanks for the inspiration.
Do you think I should mention the sunscreen or just play dumb?
The truth is always best, but stand up your ground.
I could be wrong (again), but these trucks should be able to take just about everything we can throw at them, and don't think for a minute you're not paying for that warranty.
