Today.. What should I look for to replace right away?
Fuel filter, Trans Fluid , Transfer Case, Rear End?.
What has been done to it? How is it driving? The list could be as long as your wallet is deep. If you have no maintenance documents on it, and the previous owner hasnt told you what he did, then I would consider all the fluids fair game. There are several good write ups here as well as other pages. Off hand, Welcome to guzzle's Ford PSD Maintenance Web Page will show you how do do some.
Just change the usual fluids. Trans fluid / filter, oil use motorcraft FL820s filter and your choice of oil just keep The brand consistent. Walmart sells the filter for about 4.50 and is usually has the best price on oil. There is an excellent write up on servicing the transmission by Mark K. As for the rear end most people change that every 100k miles. The transfer case is every 30,000 miles along with the transmission service. I wouldn't worry about anything going out. Most people get 200,000+miles out of these trucks without problems
What most people said already. IF no history is known;
flush the coolant
oil/filter change (stick w motrocraft 820s filter)
transmission fluid drain, filter change, fill (there is a good write up to do an extensive drain that gets most fluid out.)
differential fluid change
additional:
brake fluid flush
fuel filter change
air filter (inspect/replace)
I would read the codes too, sometimes the check engine won't come on but there are still codes. borrow the reader from a car parts store.
I ran the codes all good.. except rear sensor bought from parts dept.. Fixed.
The only thing is it wont allow me to program another door code..
I have the original one
anyone run into that?
You probably are using the programmed in code and not the one set from the factory. There is a thread on here that describes how to find the factory code. Easier on older trucks.. trial and error, there is a limited amount of possible codes.
Also, you can find the code somewhere inside the dash. See thread.
