Two examples to avoid stealerships (like you need examples)
I just receive the mailer from the local stealership, Jones West Ford of Reno, NV...with coupons, no less. Thought I'd share this with everyone because it makes me so angry I can't see straight...
Coupon #1: Filter Change Package
Replace air filter
Replace fuel Filter
Check cabin filter (if equipped)
Top off all fluids
Bargain price of: $292.99 !
Now let's see an air filter for my truck (AIS filter) is about $70 and the fuel filter is about $16...no cabin filter...tops off fluids is got to be, what, all of $1...total $87. Time to do this service is about 20 minutes tops. So for giving up the knowledge that the job is done, and done right, I would get to drive to the stealership, give them about $200 more than the service is worth, and not know it was done correctly without checking the work.
Coupon #2: Transfer Case Service
Inspect for leaks
Drain and Fill
Bargain price of: $56.99 !
This is insulting....really. A couple of quarts of ATF and look under the truck at the transfer case for leaks ($10 tops).
Both Ford corporate and the stealership should be ashamed...but they are not . Just another reason for membership on FTE...stay away from the bandits, do the job right, and save money!
TOP OFF FLUIDS. I would bet they would not ask you what type of trans fluid you use to top it off with the right fluid. Same with all other fluids, no telling what you would end up with.
I am sure some people will think that is a great deal and get
My favorite that a local dealer sends out every fall:
Diesel Glow Plug Diagnostic Check - $99
What's funny is I asked about this once (mostly for laughs) and the service advisor said: yeah, we hook your truck up to our computer and it tells us if all 8 Glow plugs are ok. Hmmmmm...... this seems sort of ok for an Excursion w/ a GP controller & GP monitoring circuit but not for my Ky built (non-cali version) F250 or our F350 both of which came w/o a GP controller.
Wonder how many folks have been taken for a ride.
Lets see - 1/2 hr of my time + one multimeter leads = GP Diagnostic check practically for free.....
I dunno, Jones West didn't top off the tranny when they rebuilt the clutch, they charged me for misc fluids, when I got it home I found they screwed up the alignment, and the tranny was a 1/2 qt low.
On top of that, the tranny now leaks around the shifter and they won't honor their warranty.
Don't ask why I had a stealer do the clutch, just say it was a VERY expensive 2 day vacation.
They know how to lure in the unsupecting people who don't know anybetter. After seeing that video about the Jiffylubes a few weeks back makes you wonder if these dealers do the same thing. I'll do it my self thank you very much .
I wish I had saved the dealer flyer that came to me a few months back, It listed glow plug replacement (all 8) for 799.95. I recieved it about a week after I had taken advantage of the autozone $.01 glow plug deal. My wife who actually knows or cares anything about my truck even laughed at that and said they were schiesters.
They will do anything to get an extra buck or 400 out of you. Had my truck at the dealership last year for some work (truck was under warranty). They replaced turbo charger and pedestal assembly, not a big deal, went in and paid my portion of the bill with out really looking at it. Got home and went line by line. They charged ME $400 for core charges. Called and wanted to know how the heck they could charge me for cores when they have the parts. I had to fight for over a week to get the money back.
I am taking the truck back in next month for more work. Lets see how much they think they can charge the little girl this time.

What are you going to have done, and do you not think you can do it yourself? If you don't want to do it yourself, unless it's a warranty item you can also look for an independent shop to do the work for less.
Just ask questions here first, then when you take it in you can talk circles around those so called service advisers.

I don't think that they'll be getting away with anything with you this time!!!
