Random engine stall

This morning on the way to work my engine died out of the blue... took a while but it eventually did re-start, and now is running fine.

Only thing I can think of is that the tank I had selected ran dry, but the gauge is off. I did switch tanks before it re-started.

Any other ideas of something that would cause this?

Air intrusion would cause the symptoms you describe ... but the problem would recur, especially if you let the truck sit for a day or two.

The air intrustion makes sense as well. I'm going to fill up the rear tank today and see how much it takes... if it's at/near capacity then I'll assume it was run out of fuel.... if not will go on to other issues.

I have had hard starting issues if it sits for more than 2 weeks, but pretty much any vehicle I've ever owned has issues if left for long periods. IP, lines and connections between IP and Injectors were gone through and replaced about 3k miles ago...

OK, have more info now

Only took 12 gals to get to the point where I could see it in the fill neck... so tank wasn't empty.

I let it sit Fri lunch through Mon lunch (today), and it started as easily as it does after sitting for 10min. I may have some air intrusion, but it seems like this would indicate it's relatively minor (am I wrong?).

So back to the pickup tube theory... Does adding 12 gallons seem about right if that were the problem? What are the other problems that would be caused by this besides reduced capacity (can I still drive without worry and just keep an eye on the gage, or is it likely to cause major other problems?).

What is required to fix this?

That sounds like about the amount of fuel that you could get out of the tank with the broken pickup tube. There are several ways to go about fixing it, but the one I like best was to use a 3/8 tube compression union, and a short piece of copper tube to extend the fuel pickup. Some have used a piece fo fuel rated rubber line clamped on the pickup tube, with a V cut into the free end to keep it from sucking to the bottom of the tank. If you want the OEM way, the "shower head" looking strainer that goes on the pickup tube from a newer 6.0 L. equipped truck will work.

Thanks, Do I need to drain and drop the tank for this, or can it be done with everything in place? Any link to pictures of the process?

I know this sounds too simple but it was bottom line fact on my truck. Not too long after I bought it (and knowing nothing about diesels) my truck would die when I would get out of the pedal when pulling up to a stop. Then it would start right up and away I go with no issues till the next stop. I had already joined this forum and was told to dump half a bottle of "Diesel Kleen", in the silver bottle, in to each tank and drive it for a bit. It worked and hasn't done it since. Was told that the new fuels are so low in sulfur, there's virtually no lube getting to the internals of the ip and it begins to "hang up" after a period of time. I have used it regularly ever since. Might be worth a try. It's about $7 at Hellmart.

Crew-It:

I had exactly the same problem you describe, and am now a regular user of DK (16oz/tank, every other tank). The problem I had last Friday was different, as it stalled while I was trying to accelerate, and did not restart easily. In the process of re-starting I tried switching to the other tank, so I thought perhaps something with the rear tank could be a problem.

if you need to get into the pickup on the tank, you have 2 options: drop the tank out, or pull the bed off. many people prefer to pull the bed off, plus you don't have to worry about how much fuel is in the tank when doing so.
the only time i pulled a tank from one of our pickups was in a gasser, and i don't remember having too much trouble dropping the front tank out the bottom, but i had a little fight getting the rear tank out. they say its easier from the top.

but it wouldn't hurt anything to play with adding something to your fuel to see if lubing things up helps a little. that could be filtered waste motor oil, ATF, or a bottle of stuff designed for our use.

Good to know and hope your problem doesn't snowball on ya. I have no other thoughts on it. Good luck.

Well hell I feel like I gave all my IDI's too much love XD:

Once every 120 gallons, on the next fillup....I will dump an entire bottle of DK(I do mean da big one, it treats 250 gallons) And I never had a problem with rolling coal like crazy and my IP and injectors always performed the best when I did that.
