hello folks...I run a '95 f250 4x4 ec...the PO advised a "heavy duty" Ford was installed a year previous to my purchase...question...is there any way to ID the heavy duty Ford trans by physical features like pan shape etc???
There is only one automatic transmission that was put into these trucks, the E4OD. If it has been made "Heavy Duty" it wasn't by Ford, and all the changes are internal (triple disk converter, heavier clutches and planetary gears, upgraded valve body, etc). There's not really anything you can tell by looking at it from the outside. You're just taking the guy's word for it and if he said it was from Ford, them my guess is that it is a stock transmission. The only thing they could have done was to put the latest version of that transmission in the truck, which had a few improvements over some of the early designs, but my guess is that it is a stock E4OD.

thanks guys!!!
Nate is right, but I am curious if you mean the trans pan or the actual Transmission?
Your title says trans pan, but it sounds like you are talking about the actual transmission.
But yes if Ford re-did the trans I would assume it to be a stock one...
I dont know why if a trans fails that you would take it back to the place that put it in. Id try elsewhere searching for a trans I couldnt break!
I know that wasnt you. Im just a professional ranter.
I just got off the phone with a buddy at Ford parts department. If you got a E4OD from ford it was the HD verson. The only difference is it has(his words) a so called better TQ which is junk and they changed the springs in the VB for a better shift which didn't help.
Now on the ad they offer a standard verson and a HD
