Anyone have a write up on replacing the ignition actuator rod on my 1985 F150 AT non-tilt pickup or just a general guideline I can use. It has been over 100 degrees for several days, with no relief in sight, so I can only work in the early mornings before it gets too hot, so the simpler the better.
We have a non tilt it does have the pot metal on our 86 F150. We haven't replaced it yet we just use needle nose or vise grips. It is a pretty comman part breaking so whats the point of constantly fixing it me and my dad figure.

You say it is hot out there where you are? It's nice and cool here in Green Country!
I'll look at the FSM in the morning to see if there's a decent writeup. But, it won't be before it gets hot 'cause it isn't going to even get down to 80 tonight. And, it'll have to be after my dental appointment. Sorry.
Was talking to a guy down the street today and his outdoor thermometer showed 116 this afternoon. Granted it was on the west side, but it wasn't in the sun. And, the weatherman said we have another month of this ahead of us.
Thanks guys for the input & keep it coming as I need all the help I can get. It was 116 degrees here yesterday so I thought I would get up early and take a look at the problem, got up at 6 o'clock & it was already 90 degrees, I said to h*** with it until it gets as little cooler. How do you use needle nose or vise grips to get it out of park as I have some junk in the back I need to get rid of, if I could do that I could wait till Fall to do a proper job.
Here's a link to a picture of both columns. Piece #14 is the one that always breaks on the tilt columns. You can see the non-tile column doesn't have this piece. http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/fd/full.aspx?Page=118
Are you sure you have a non-tilt column? When I first got my 1980 years ago, I didn't know it had tilt till someone told me to push forward on the turnsignal switch, and the column suddenly fell down. If the hole that the turnsignal lever goes through looks like a "T", then I bet you have a tilt column.
Franklin2, I have owned this pickup for somewhere around 15 years & I know that it doesn't have tilt, TILL you came along. I was so sure in fact, that I went out just to prove myself right and lo and behold it had a forward motion with the turn siginal but nothing happened, I took some spray lube to it and after a bit, I now have tilt wheel That is crazy, I never knew that, how funny & thank you for setting me straight, this is the best I have to offer
Now, if I knew how to get it out of park so I could move it.
If all you want to do is get it out of Park, go under and take the bolt loose that connects the steering column's linkage to the rod that goes to the tranny. You can then move the tranny's gear selector from underneath, but you can move it. Oh, by the way, don't take it out of park w/o the emergency brake being on.
Hey, I had my truck for several years till I found out myself.
Since you have a tilt column, all the previous posts about it will apply including the repair instructions.
To get it started for now, take the short column covers off that are close to the cluster. On top of the cluster you will see a rod. This is what activates the ignition switch. Turn the key to start, and then take some pliers and grab the rod on top of the column, and "help it" to move forward, it should crank.
Then take a screw driver, and poke around on the passenger side of the column in the same area. If you take the screwdriver and move the potmetal piece up out of the way, it should unlock the column. The guy I bought my diesel from did this for years till I bought it and took it apart and replaced piece #14.
