David, if you really are interested in doing an upgrade to your '03, the part numbers are PW-491 (4C3Z-8501-AC) for the larger later model year water pump, along with 4C3Z-6608-B for the complete engine front cover assembly that will be needed to accomodate the larger pump. I actually just did this upgrade very recently for a fellow member that I did head studs on.
Cheezit what exactly is the correct one ? last time i put in thremo found little pieces of what looked like black plastic in there . Is this pieces of my water pump impeller .
Well just finished putting her back together the AC compressor is a bi-ch , even after you get everything out of the way . This is what i found the compressor did not implode , i think it was just the clutch that did implode . But the front seal on the compressor I am sure was leaking . The water pump i pulled and it seemed in like new condition , bearings tight and plastic impeller like new . So i put it back i know what ya'll are going to say but what the hell . And inside the pump area looked great . The pulleys were tight and with no play in them and there still there . Tomorrow a friend will VAC the system and charge it . Oh also pulled orfice tube and was clean replaced with new . Also replaced accumlator and or dryer whatever its called .
It's hard to say.... there is a fine balance between "PITA factor" (how hard to do), cost and the "what if" *sense of mind/what it corrects". Using this scale you can see the blue spring is a no brainer.... same with the coolant filter
With that being said I think you did the right thing.... I normally go off my gut and a visual. But usual it is if not broken don't fix it. Especially since this is relatively easy to get to.
I already know that when I do the next EGR cooler/oil cooler I will do BPD and the studs at the same time. (pita factor) This last time I went OEM but added the coolant filter (to be honest I think ford should have recalled EVERY 6.0 and add a Filter to be changed every other oil change, or every oil change. I mean really I think it is $14 for a filter with the isolation valves I lose a cup of coolant.....) but that is a lilttle off topic.
