Okay got fan , stator , and shroud off to do AC compressor . And want to say that after reading threads on fan removal that took people forever i was worried about tackling it . But i did it the CHEEZIT way with a air hammer ( cost only 15 bucks ) and it made short work of it . I could do it all in 20 min now . So back to ?? water pump is right there 10 years old and 166000 should i replace it or wait for it to go on its own ?
if you do please make shure you get the correct one. also as a note I personly have had lots of issues with 03/04 replacment water pumps from ford. IMO I would get one with the steel impeller on the early pump.
I don't think there's a right or wrong answer on that one.
Cons:
1. "I'm still Rollin with my original ....." and you could add water pump to the list.
2. Less expensive to leave it.
3. Only take 20 min to get to it.
4. you'll have a future use for your new air hammer.
5. Less chance of skinning a knuckle.
6. Finish current job quicker.
7. If it ain't broke.......
8. Consider it a "test" and see how far it will go.
9. Won't have to worry if the new one is good quality.
10. Impress the wife (or girlfriend) with lower total bill for current repair.
Pro's:
1. You're right there, just knock it out.
2. It will probably fail soon anyway.
3. Be interesting to see if it has plastic impeller.
4. Coolant is drained already.
5. Will be saving the time it takes to pull it back apart.
6. Shiny new metal parts look good.
7. Good chance to check front cover for cavitation.
8. Impress wife (girlfriend) with skill and knowledge.
9. Piece of mind (pumps in good shape- not gonna crap out on the road)
10. Ummm........

Rusty they both look tempting but thinking new pump .
Sorry I see that your question was "do it or not?"
Here's what I went through ....
Replaced fan clutch. 1.5hrs and 70 miles later I was dumping coolant. Radiator had cracked at the plastic. Installed new all metal Bullet proof diesel radiator. Drove the truck next day got home and new coolant leak coming from water pump. Replaced it with Napa part.
Right now I can get to that pump in 15mins but for $40 I would do it now so as not have to mess with it again. My $0.02.
Be a rebel. Change serpentine belt too!
Lower and upper radiator hoses too.
murphy's law ya know.
Good luck.
i 'm building up parts s i can do stuff in batches like this.

I agree.
If it is one of those things that get replaced every now and then.
Like the belt. upper, lower hoses and T-stat. I would replace it and the
pump falls into that club.
Also things like U-joints,spline grease, front ,read differential oil,
Transfer case oil, Coolant and the filter the list goes on.
How ever you are the one that has to pick at what point do you
stop and drive it.
