A/C pump question

A/C pump question
The a/c pump in my '76 does not work. Upon further inspection, there is no power in the wire that runs to the pump. Will I ruin anything by running a wire directly off the battery just to test it? I just want to see if the pump is any good, so the wire would not stay there more than just a few minutes.

I'm assuming you've got the York compressor. I would be a good idea to check the oil level in the compressor before "firing it up".
But, hot wiring it temporarily won't hurt anything.

You can check the compressor by hand turning the front of the clutch. That way you can assess if it feels ok, or if it feels like there are loose parts or if it is seized. For simple testing, you will be fine to apply power to the compressor, as long as you don't hook to the ground side.
