clutch swap

flywheel in my 87 F-250 shot, of course i cant find a new one so my mechanic thinks we may be able to put one from a 7.3 into it, same number teeth on flywheel but .... is this do-able ????

Not recommended, the 6.9 and 7.3 have a different external balance. Might look a single mass flywheel kit and use the older fly

old fly is the problem, and yes the single mass kit is what we're doing, thanx for the info

well it worked. 88 7.3 kit in 87 6.9 my wrench has has been doing Ford trucks for around 50 years, and a damn good friend at that, back on the road

Sorry I missed the specifics of your post the first time I read it the other day. Supposedly the (87 only) 6.9. and the 7.3 IDI flywheels are one and the same.

They in fact are the same flywheel....for THAT year only.

ok I'm a little confused (what else is new)was swapping the entire clutch does with and 88 7.3 a problem because so far, (about 40 miles) is hasnt been one ???

It is confusing. I think what it is. The 87 is a single mass. Drilled for the 7.3 clutch. Not sure when the 7.3 went to the dual mass.

my 88 had a dual mass piece of crap in it .

The '87 is factory dual mass when it had the ZF.

yup. if it has a ZF trans it is dual mass. if it has a 4 speed it is single .
but it is very easy to put a single flywheel setup on a ZF trans truck, and commonly done to get away from the problems of the dual mass.
