I have a dual mass flywheel in my 87 6.9 that is chattering. Can I replace it with a solid flywheel from an earlier 6.9 without changing anything else? If not, what else do I need?
I have read here that it is a swap. I think you will need the SM clutch, P-plate, and T-bearing. Think the fork is OK.
I'm sure the experts will chime in here to confirm.
I think I read somewhere that you can even retro-swap an old 6.9 SM flywheel into a 7.3 DM. Wondered if this is cheaper or as good as the LUK system? If so, why is it not done more often?
The Luk system is a 13" clutch that takes the torque much better.
I am running a 6.9 flywheel on my 7.3 turbo with no problems. But I do have to watch how hard I mash the loud pedal or it slips.
As long as it's a direct swap, I'm happy. I can always upgrade the clutch , I just hate to shell out several hundred bucks on something that I can fix with factory parts for a lot less $$$.
I'm taking it that you can swap flywheels, do you have to replace the clutch with the earlier style too? What's the cutoff dates for the parts?
Sure looks like it. When you look at the flywheel through a gap in the inspection cover, the flywheel looks strange. There are some levers and springs visible where there should just be a flywheel. I've never seen anything like it, so I was guessing that it was the dreaded dual mass.
Sure yar not looking at the pressure plate when you see the springs and levers. you might want to pop the cover plate off four bolts and get a much better look to see what you have or dont have.
