Went out to run to the store in my 03 V10 X and no start. Things I have checked:
Battery voltage is fine ( 12.6 VDC at battery while turning the key )
Tried using a jump pack just to make sure
Tried starting in neutral
Tried wiggling shifter
Banging on starter
I can hear the starter make a click sound when the ignition is turned all the way. I assume the started is DOA?
Check the short wire from the solenoid to the starter motor. It is down on the starter. Clean and tighten. You should remove neg from battery before you check it.

I tried to take that wire off today after work and the stud broke. It looked clean and corrosion free anyway. So I am buying a new starter.
Is there a preferred one? OEM? Or will AutoZone / Napa, etc.. be acceptable? Which Ford dealer do we get the best discount?
For the archives, it was indeed a bad starter. I replaced it with a new one and she fired right up. If you end up changing one there are 3 bolts that hold the starter in place, and the top one is not fun to get at!
I know about the third bolt, it applies to both our trucks apparently. That's why I bought a gear reduction starter with only two bolts on it. MUCH easier to replace...(it's a diesel thing though)
