9" Drum Brake Spring Orientation

Hey all,

I'm new here, I've had my '92 Ranger STX (short box regular cab, 3.0 liter V-6) since 2005. I'm doing the rear drum brakes and the perfectionist in me has a question regarding the return springs. My Brakeware kit comes with white and green return springs. They are identical except the green spring has 11 coils and the white one has 12 with the respective subtle difference in length. Can anyone bring to light which one is supposed to go where? The opposite side was done incorrectly by the greasemonkey at Firestone a few years back, so I can't go off of that. Many thanks!

-Nicholas

Is there a difference between the front and rear shoes in distance from the very front to where the springs hook? if so one would think the longer one would go to that one.

Yes for some reason it doesn't look like it in the photo but I measured the distances and from the primary shoe to the anchor stud it's about an inch farther than from the secondary shoe to the stud. That was my basis for placing the white (longer) spring where I did. Although now that I think about it I don't know why the two distances would be so far off... the shoes are identical except for the length of the brake material. Hmm. I'll have to check again when I get home today. Another train of thought would be use the shorter spring on the primary shoe to get more tension there to return the spring to the "ready" position in preparation for the next brake application. I'm probably completely overthinking this but the reason I work on my own truck is to get stuff like this right.

Thanks for the response, reddog99, but apparently I don't have the member priviledges for PMs yet. But to answer your question.... nick is the username and I am at airplaneit.net. Thanks!

Get back to us when you figger it out. Other people may not have the manual, and I'd like to know if it's the same as the one I sent you.

Good luck.

Thanks Reddog!!! That manual is great help! The brakes are the same, but the hardware kit I got has slightly different springs. It's beginning to be something that's really starting to irk the crap out of me about the auto parts industry. When I order an "exact fit" part, I expect it to be absolutely the same thing that the vehicle came off the assembly line with. Not something that just "works". I just encountered the same thing with some brake cylinders. I got two new ones and the bleeder screws are different sizes on what are supposed to be identical parts.

Hey I'm working on a 1994 Ranger with the same brakes... Found one side was done with the white spring towards the front (on primary shoe) and the other side was done with white spring on the back (secondary and e-brake). Did you ever figure out which is right? I'm thinking the white one(which is like 1/2" around vs the green one that's 3/8") should be on the back because it's longer and moves more?

No, sorry, I don't think I ever got a definitive answer. I went back and looked at a PDF I have and the springs shown are two COMPLETELY different sizes, so it can't really be compared.

I put the green springs on the front shoes because all of the pictures online had bigger springs on the front shoes... Seems to be working ok. We'll see if they don't adjust or something over the next couple weeks... thanks
