coolant leak/fix

I have a 2001 F-150 5.4 engine. There is a coolant leak where the coolant leaves the head. Looks like a new gasket is in order. The part that needs to come off crosses over to the driver's side and the thermostat mounts into it. To remove this part and replace the gasket, it appears that most of the top of the engine, throtle body, fuel rails, intake, etc., will have to come off. One of the four bolts holding the part on is installed with the bolt head facing down. The only way I see to get this out is to take everthing apart.

Any suggestions?

its called a "cross over" and it is bolted to the bottom of the intake manifold. There are not gaskets on the tube, there are o-rings and a groove in the manifold. Sometimes the groove fails and causes the o-ring to shift.

Thanks Steve. I can see where it bolts up into the intake. There's no way to get at the bolt head without taking the intake and everything else off. It looks like the crossover was attached to the intake before it was put on the engine. The leak started shorting out a COP and at first I thought that was the problem until I opened the hood.

If anyone knows an easier way, let me know.

Thanks

YEs, it is bolted on first, and no, you cant get it off without taking the intake manifold off the head. You may find the plastic manifold is damaged in the o-ring area and that let the o-ring move and leak. Most just replace the manifold. I filled the o-ring groove with epoxy, filed smooth and put gaskets and RTV in the joint instead of the o-ring. Either will work. And yes, the leak will spray at the first two COPS and can cause them to short out.. I had that TWICE !
