Hi there,
I just bought a 5th wheel camper and the dealer said that my 1/2 ton wouldn't have a problem pulling it and he was soooo wrong. I love the camper so we decided to buy a different truck and I got a hell of a deal on it. OK what I am (er. I mean what I will be towing)pulling is a 25.5 foot weighing 6000lbs dry 8000lbs loaded, what I bought is a 1990 Heavy duty F250 4X2 supercab longbox, 3.55 gears, with auto and EFI460 the guy that I bought it from used it to tow his 5er. I don't know how big it was but I need your opinion on will I be able to tow my camper now? What are my limits on towing?
Sounds like you're good to go, boss!
That camper salesman was only interested in selling you a camper. If he'd told you the truth you might have spent the money on a more suitable truck and not the camper. Then him don't get no commission!
You made a wise choice getting the Supercab longbox as wheelbase has a distinct effect on towing stability. You don't want a short wheelbase when pulling something like your 5er.
Happy camping and Welcome to FTE!!!!
Your new truck won't have any problem at all. My father used to pull a early 80's 28' Jayco 5er with his 81 F-250 4X4 with a 300-6. That truck made 2-3 trips from Wisconsin to Florida and back, pulling the mountains and ever missed a beat. But then he bought his first F-250 diesel back in 84, and has had F-250/F350 diesels ever since.... but anyway back to the original subject... The 460 will love to pull your 25' 5er, but it will also love the gas... Good luck, and happy camping.
A 3/4 ton will haul that trailer real good. Just remember to fill that truck up often, it will suck the gas down real quick. Those 460's usually get about 8mpg when towing, so have fun!
