I'm supposed to sign papers today on an '04 f250crew 4x4 lariat with the short bed, 5.4l engine and 3.73 gears. I was looking at the brocure last night and it claims that the truck can only pull a loaded trailer weight of 6900 pounds???? My 97 f-150 pulls 7700? What gives? My camper is a 30 foot cherokee which I took to the truck scale and weight was 9000 lbs. I know the gears change the tow capacity, but according to research, I'll need a semi to pull the camper.....Does anybody have a 250 setup like me and pull a heavy camper? I don't know what to do? I'm ready to cancel the transaction and keep my 150!
Please respond

Ps, all salesman assured me there would be no problem towing the camper(9000lbs) saying the truck can tow 12,500? but the brochure has it printed in black and white" can tow 6900lb loaaded trailer"
The F150 is a lighter truck with the same engine. The extra wieght of the F-250 is subtracted from the tow rating. Your salesman deserves to loose your sale. I would say you need a least the V10 with 4.30 rear to comfortably tow 9,0000lbs.
Take a look at the towing forum. lots of good info is posted there.
Edit: I can seem to get a link to post...The towing specs are under the "Specs" of the SuperDuty page

in the owners manual of my 2001 it states that a f250 with the 5.4 and 3.73 axle has a maximum trailer tow weight of 10,000#. i do not think it would drop to 6900# in a few years(the 04 is almost identical to an '01) check the owners manual
You don't need a semi, what you need is a diesel F350! The F250 has a low GVWR and the extra for an F350 is worth it. If you don't like diesel, then a V10 will do, but I say diesel is the way to go.
The 2004 Ford Towing Guide shows that a 250 Crew Cab 4x4 with the 5.4 and 3.73 gears can tow a MAXIMUM of 6900 lbs. (conventional or 5th wheel). A V10 can pull 10,200, and the PSD can tow 12,500, regardless of axle. Sportscar is right: your salesman should look elsewhere for work. Consider a 150 w/ the heavy-duty payload package (which can tow up to 9900 lbs), or wait for a 2005 F-250 (don't have trailering capabilities from Ford yet).
I can assume you're not talking about EVERY car salesman, right?
What! There's a difference .........LOL
There are exceptions to every rule, and Jeff you are definitely the exception. A more honest person one will never meet. Everyone should be so lucky as to buy a vehicle from you.
Hey, I wasn't fishing for a complement, just a reaction! I know you're always good for one of those! Besides, I'm lucky to have such good customers, so I guess it all goes hand in hand, right?
(Okay, maybe I was fishing, just a little....... )

thats wild, it has really changed that much, i wonder why. my 2001 manual states 5.4 3.73 rear axle 10,000# max trailer weight with class iv hitch. what did they change?

wlihntr, I had a 2001 F-250 5.4 3.37...I remember the owners manual listing a towing chart that indicated 10,000lbs, until you read the fine print. Take a close look at those charts and the small print.
I still have a copy of the 2001 Ford RV and Trailer Towing Guide. The listing for a 2001 F250 Crew Cab 5.4l 3.73rear is 7,100lbs. A 4x2 reg cab 5.4l 4.10 has 9,600lb trailer limit

this is the only print under the chart;Conventional/Class IV trailer hitch only.(referenced to the Maximum trailer weight) Fifth wheel trailer maximum weights can be calculated by subtracting GVW from GCWR.
thats it, from reading that i would presume if i had a Conventional/Class IV hitch i could tow a 10,000# trailer with that engine/rearend combo
I complained that dealerships, mechanics, parts apartments and so on all give different weights I can tow with my 2004 Ford EX XLT 5.4L 2 Valve 4x4 4 Speed Trans plus OD 4:11 final drive 7500 pound dry weight (verified by me at Cat Scales). Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating was just over 16,000 pounds.
I have a 5700 pound dry weight Travel Trailer.
Travel Trailer loaded to the hilt 7685. I never have it loaded to this weight. I am actually 6900 pounds when RVing.
Truck dry weight with a full 42 gallon gas tank 7500 pounds.
Allowable cargo in SUV 1868 pounds
My truck will as I was told in an email tow 7900 pounds without a problem.
My brochure info says 7700 from the original purchase.
I have towed my trailer and never felt it behind me. It pulls flawlessly at 60 to 65 mph in Tow setting.
Gas Mileage is only 11 miles per gallon.
Not towing anything and only myself and my hunting dog in the truck with me it will get nearly 17 miles per gallon at 62 mph.
It did have some sway but a 32 footer will catch some wind even with my weight distribution hitch.
