GVWR

My 2011 6.2 3.73 XLT 4x4 is a Texas/Oklahoma Edition with a GVWR of 9600. What makes the 9.6k super duy different from a 6.2 3.73 super duty with a GVWR rating of 10k? Is it the suspension or tires or what? The vehicles are basically the same. Same engine same trans and gearing so where does it get the extra 400lbs?
I am looking at a Cougar toy hauler 5th wheel with a wet rating of 12.3k. Will the 6.2 3.73 with the 9.6 GVWR handle that load? If I beef up the suspension and replace the stock Generals Grabber tires with Michelins would that increase the GVWR?
Just dont get it and any input is appreciated.

My very uneducated guess would be that package you have. It sounds like a special dealer trim package. Perhaps they did something. Realistically the 9.6k and 10k trucks are not gonna handle the trailer any differently.

Do all the normal things you would do for the trailer you are getting. Make sure your tires are strong enough (load class E preferred), and you will probably want to add some air bags because the 2011's squat a tad.

Difference of 400lbs is probably a tire width or an extra leaf spring, nothing major. 12K isn't much of a load for a SD either way. GVW and trailer weight have very little to do with each other. Pin weight and Gross combined are the numbers you want to pay more attention to.

In some states you pay a licensing and insurance premium for a vehicle 10000 pounds and over, so they make versions at 10k and versions below 10k.

In the real world, it is probably due to one leaf on the rear suspension spring pack.

If knowing the weight of the toy hauler is important to you be careful of the factory weight ratings. Folks are reporting weights frequently run much heavier than the factory label indicates. Many are as much as 2,000 pounds off.

Just a heads up. If you don't weigh it, you will never know for sure.
