I want to change the fluid in my rear axle (2000, f250 SD, 4x4, auto.) I'm a bit confused on which oil to use. The service guy at the Ford dealer looked up my VIN and said I need to use synthetic 75-90W. My owners manual says "75-140W High Performance Synthetic" or "80-90W Premium Rear Axle Lubricant (Dana 135 axles.)" According to the printout the parts guy gave me I have a non-limited slip axle. The printout doesn't say anything about a Dana 135 axle. Which lubricant? Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll go with the synthetic 75-140w.
Yes. I used the Motorcraft stuff - you can find it cheaper on eBay. Mobil 1 and WalMart also make a 75W-140 full synthetic. I used 3.5 quarts.
Look at the tag on your door pillar to find your axle code and determine whether or not you have LS. If so then you'll need a little friction modifier. Some of the Mobil 1 / WalMart fluid already has friction modifier in it so get the right stuff based on your need.
For ~$50 you can also go with the aluminum finned diff cover that Ford started putting on SDs in '08 and later. You'll need 1 1/4 inch bolts if you go this route.
