1950 F2

I'm new. I have a 50 F2 which is maroon in color. I believe that it is the original color but I haven't seen that maroon is a standard color. Can someone tell me how I might confirm the original color?

Thx!

I don't recall a maroon color being on the standard color list, but anything is possible with special orders. Most people don't go through the trouble of repainting every square inch of these trucks when doing a color change unless they're doing a complete and total restoration. Unless that has been done on your truck, there's very likely some hidden areas somewhere that would still have the original color; under the seat, behind the gas tank or interior trim panels, behind the firewall insulator under the dash, maybe even behind the access plates on the insides of the doors. Sometimes research on old trucks is a little like an archaeological dig. And that's part of the fun. Welcome to the forum!

Check the build code stamped on the firewall. The original color code should be there.

Here's a VIN decoder that should work for your F2. Look for the digits that indicate the color code:

Well, I suppose that the 1949 year VIN was a different animal, as it looks nothing like the 51-52 series you show in the chart. The VIN for Gertie goes 98RDXXXXXX. The six trailing X's are all numerals. Is there a way to decode these numbers?

Sorry if I hijacked, but I figured the question was germane since the O.P. has a 1950, and I would assume the VIN scheme was the same as in 1949.

Oops... That decoder is for 51-53 VINs. Maybe someone else with earlier information can weigh in.

The only way to tell anything additional on 48-50 trucks, like the production date, plant and color, is by finding the stampings on the cowl. It's usually stamped in the center of the cowl by the top.

Ilya, I assume the stamping is into the sheet metal of the cowl itself, and not on a plate of some sort. I say this because my '49 has been in the family since around '69 or so, was a very low mileage vehicle at the time, thus VERY original, and the only plates are on the firewall and glovebox door.

I'll have to take a close look this weekend when I am out putting in brake lines, master and wheel cylinders, thermostats, vacuum hose, wheel seals, etc., etc.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ghtsafter1.jpg

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.

Yes, the stamping is in the sheet metal of the cowl and not a separate plate. Look for the sanded portion of the cowl in the upper area directly below the seam.

Here it is up close.
