Yesterday I was looking at the motor in my '66 when I noticed one of the rivets had fallen out of the flex fan (we all know what flex fans can do). Needless to say my truck does not have a fan any more. With the flex fan the truck could get a little hot putting around. I what to upgrade to a fan that pulls A LOT of air (why not?) What would you all recommend? Clutch fan?
Redneck, These trucks have a huge frontal opening, keep it moving 20 mph and you don 't need a fan at all. The truck will not sit still idling very long without the temp gauge moving up. Keeping a good 50/50 mix is important too. Just replace the fan, enjoy the heat.
If you don't have a shroud on it, I would consider putting one on. It will run cooler and it will be a little safer. I put one on mine and it runs plenty cool even in 100 degree weather.
If you're going electric, I've read the Mark VIII and Tbird fans are really powerful and cheap at the salvage yard. You'll probably have to upgrade your alternator if you go that route...I'm sure if you do a search you'll pull up quite a bit of info....
Electric doesn't take any of the engines power? It doesn't make the alternator work harder which makes it harder to turn? I don't want to run electric anyway. I keep a 50/50 mix in all my vehicles. If I keep the truck above 15 mph it stays cool. This is my ranch truck and at times, I am running 5 - 10 MPH for over 1/2 hour. I also tow up to 20,000 lbs. at times. I will be getting a shroud too.
