My new 400 runs great. It pulls mountains nice and cool under full load with a trailer. It stays cool driving on the street. But when I am putting my trailer in and out of storage, working it hard with little air flow it heats up real quick. My rad is good, brand new 180 thrm, I'm pretty sure my cap is good, It has a flexi 6 blade fan with no clutch. What is my problem??? Should I ditch all of it and go with an electric fan/s? What is a good setup? What does every one else run??
Make sure the fan shroud is intact and the fan is properly positioned about 1-1.5" into the shroud. Get a thermostatic clutch fan for the most efficient operation.
If he posts the diameter of the flex fan, a Ford fan w/ or w/o a viscous drive (fan clutch) can be figured out from there. He didn't say what yr the truck was (1959?), only that it has a 400.
I had a 440 Mopar that only got hot idling around, it had a blown head gasket. It didn't leak cooland, but was letting compression into the cooling system.
my flex fans have never failed. they work find for me. no matter what kind of fan you choose, make sure the shroud is proper too. the shroud should house the fan to pull the heat out of the rad properly.

Yeah what HRD said. :)
But. ;)
A clutch-fan with a fan-clutch to drive it will be a lot quieter for highway use.
Maybe that doesn't matter to you?
One of the few things I've added to my pickup and one of my favorite modifications.
D8TZ-8600-A .. Fan, 5 Blade use without clutch 18 1/2"
D9TZ-8600-A .. Fan. 5 Blade use with fan clutch 18 1/2"
D3TZ-8600-B .. Fan, 7 Blade use with clutch 19"
These fans are not necessarily engine specific, the first two were used on 351M/400 and 460's. The last number will work on all V8's, as long as the diameter of the fan clears the shroud.

Flex fans only feather with RPM, even with a boiling hot radiator they will feather. Clutch fans feather with RPM
(less drag) and low temps. They will only pull the air that is needed regardless of RPM so they have far less drag. So if you are crawling around putting the boat in the water etc running high rpm in low gear the fan will pull air when the engine gets hot. The thermostatic clutch fans are far superior to a flex fan which is why they are used in most applications today even tho they are more expensive than a flex fan for an OEM. The OEM's don't usually go for expensive parts that don't work well in most applications. I have seen a few applications where they went that way for bragging rights in a limited production vehicle but not on a workhorse.
