I was finishing up stripping down the doner truck this weekend. When I bought the truck, the guy told me that he had "cracked" the right front axle and said that internal damage had occured due to this "crack", so he pulled the axle and soon after dumped the truck (into my lap).
I thought nothing of it, because the front axles were not what I was after on this parts truck. To make a long story boring, I was just pulling some last minute parts from the truck before shipping her off to her final resting place. I noticed a strange bracket by the steering damper. I thought that it may be a special bracket for the aftermarket damper. A closer look said otherwise. The lower bracket for the track bar was broken. This allowed the track bar to hang and bang onto the damper and housing.
He had kept the "cracked" axle, (wich I see no craks in), so I had to take a look. Cleaned up and sandblasted, no crack.
The moral of the story I guess, is make sure that what you think is broken, is really broken. Otherwise you may unload your rig for parts, before its time is up. This particular failure is common in 99-02 trucks for sure, but if you don't know to look for it, it may cost you.
It worked out for me in this case. I have a complete front diff backup or future build now. This will not happen to anyone else in the future I hope.
