more details; when I spun the driveshaft in 2wd it spun freely and the axles spun too. as soon as I shifted into 4wd, I could not move it at all, not even 1 revolution. so I left it in 4x and jacked up the front end and I could spin a tire freely, axles did not move at all. I have the TTB front end, does that make any difference?

I'm not familular with auto locking hubs of this generation, but can you lock them manually? Not being able to turn the driveshaft when the transfer case is in 4wd tells me the transfer case is doing its job, and the axles turning when the drive shaft is rotated when the transfer case is in 2wd says the diff is working, so this points to the hubs. If funds are available, get the manual Warn priemum hubs and be done with the auto lockers. The only difference the TTB would make is if you had a D44 or D50, and that would only be in which hubs you need. The D 50 and the solid axle D60 take the same locking hub.
found a pair in salvage yard for $40, 1st one came off in about 20 minutes, 2nd one not so much. What is the easiest way to get that &%&^ retaining ring out of it's little groove? I popped the tip off of 2 of my little screwdrivers trying to get it out of the groove and bout passed out from heat stroke and ended up telling dude I would be back today to get the other half. checked temp with the thermocouple on my meter and the concrete I was sitting on registered 127º!

Ya, that ring can be fun to remove. I've seen 2 different ones, a single wire type and the other is a spirial flat one. On both you need to get the end started out of the groove. The wire type, one screw driver to pop the end from the groove, and another to pry it out. The spirial one, start like the wire one,but this one makes 2 laps around the inside of the hub so you just need a little more time. You will get it, today it will probably about jump out, ha!
5 frikkin minutes to get the ring out this morning!!! so I wandered around and found a hood release cable I needed and that took longer to get off. Tomorrow I'll start the switch, hope they are the right ones, if they're not, I figure I paid for a lesson in how-to.
Worst case all you would need is the conversion kit. I did this swap on a 90' half ton and the only thing I had to change was to leave out a splined spacer that went behind the auto hub. However the hub design my have changed.
