89 I/6 with the Borg Warner transfer case. Got stuck today :-) in a small mud puddle (dang georgia clay) shifted into 4wd and nothing? all the lights worked. Hubs locked fine? the normal click when turned to lock. 4wd low range worked (back end only)No odd sounds, other than the snikkering from the right seat.
I hope this problem rings a bell with some of you.
Are these cheep/easy to fix (hehe) or should I just let 300,000+ miles be good enuf.?
Maybe a u-joint? I'm sure a transfer case just don't quit at the drop of a hat. My 90 bronc had a problen similer, but that was pushbutton 4x4, bad shift motor. Maybe take a look at the linkage and make sure no pin or something fell off. It's probably some minor glich. I think you would hear SOMEthing if the t-case went out.
I'd do 2 simple tests. First lock the hubs (I assume you have manual hubs). Mark the drive shaft and then drive a foot or two and see if the drive shaft has moved. If it does then your hubs are good. Now unlock the hubs and shift into 4WD. Again mark and check your drive shaft. If the shaft moves then your transfer case is good. I would bet your problem is in the hubs. If you have manuals you probably just need to remove them and clean them. If they get too much grease in them (slung out from the wheel bearings over time) they won't work. If you have automatic hubs then you can try cleaning them but you will probably need to get a hub service kit from Ford or replace them with new manuals. Good luck, Ben
